Welcome to Speares Website

Speares Rowing Club are delighted to announce the launch of their sister Club Speares Extreme. Experience Life……….Reconnect your soul with adventure!

Shakespeare Rowing Club, known  as 'Speares', was formed to promote rowing and other sporting activities. The club brought together people who wanted to share their sporting activities and promote cross training.

In Spring 2002, a group of like minded sportsmen and women were drinking at the The Pen and Parchment, and chatting about various sporting activities in which each had participated the previous weekend. An idea developed to form a new club to encompass a variety of sports but to major in rowing.

From there Speares rapidly gained momentum and, in August 2002, the Club received official recognition from the Amateur Rowing Association. Membership quickly grew from six core members to around thirty five today. Speares take part in running, sailing, rugby, wheelchair basketball, mountain biking, triathlons, sea kayaking and of course rowing.

Speares boasts twelve boats including six training boats and five top class racing boats. These are stored at Stratford Marina.

There have been many successes both on and off the water. In August 2002, the Club went to Dartmouth for their premier regatta and notched up their first victory in the women’s double sculls. The club has had many wins at regatta races both on the local and southern circuits. Two members succeeded in getting to compete at the Royal Henley Regatta in 2004.

Off the water, the Inaugural Dinner was held on the 26th October, 2002. 150 guests were entertained at the black tie event, held at the Swans Nest Hotel, with a three course meal, live music and Judge the fantastic spontaneous poet.  In 2003, the New Year kicked off with a magnificent Burn's Night held at the Cox's Yard, bagpiper and all. In October 2003-6 Speares Annual balls were held at the Moat House in Stratford with up to 220 guests.

As well as regular water training, on most Thursdays you will find members in a Stratford pub -Thirsty Thursdays as they are nicknamed after all it is the beginning of the weekend!

Speares are looking for new members and coxes. Call Richard Ludlow on 07778 412 760 for more details or go to our membership page.

The ethos of the club is to work hard and play hard.
